History
Karate is the general term for the martial art
which developed over several centuries on the island of Okinawa, south
of mainland Japan. It is a discipline which emphasizes blocks, strikes,
and kicks, but which can also incorporate throws and joint locks. In
the early 20th century, Gichin Funakoshi (1868-1957) was the
first of several instructors to introduce karate to mainland Japan. He
and his followers developed the shotokan style of karate, and founded
the Japan Karate Association (JKA) in 1949. The JKA became the most
famous karate organization world-wide, and began to export karate to the
rest of the world in the 1960’s, by sending its highest quality
instructors to teach and reside in different parts of the world.
New Orleans was one of the locations chosen to have
a JKA instructor, and in the 1960s, Master Takayuki Mikami, who now
resides and teaches in Metairie, was sent here to represent the JKA.
Our national organization is the Japan Karate Association American
Federation (JKAAF), which still maintains direct connection with the
world organization headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. Two of the founders
of Studio Zen, including the karate instructor, are direct students of
Master Mikami, and train with him on a regular basis.
